Mick Jenkins and EMIL bring Chicago and London together on A Murder of Crows

Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins teams up with South East London producer EMIL on A Murder of Crows, an 11-track collaboration that brings Jenkins’ thoughtful writing together with EMIL’s jazz-leaning production.

The project first arrived through EVEN in September 2025 before reaching wider streaming services in October. It opens with “Dream Catchers”, setting the tone with a sparse, soulful backdrop for Jenkins’ measured delivery.

Two Cities, One Sound

Mick Jenkins and EMIL come from different sides of the Atlantic, but the collaboration developed naturally. EMIL had been sending ideas to Jenkins for several years before the pair began working more seriously towards a joint project.

The album brings together Jenkins’ Chicago roots and EMIL’s South East London production. The sound moves through dusty samples, restrained percussion, piano and atmospheric textures, giving Jenkins plenty of room for his writing.

The project also features South London artist ENNY on “Words I should’ve said”. Their collaboration gives the track two perspectives on regret and the things left unsaid after a relationship breaks down.

What Does A Murder of Crows Mean?

The album title comes from old folklore surrounding crows. Jenkins explained that large groups of crows were once associated with death because they would gather around battlefields and feed on the bodies left behind.

That idea fits the darker themes running through the project. Across the album, Jenkins reflects on social, political and personal subjects while EMIL creates a restrained backdrop that keeps the focus on the writing.

A Cross-Atlantic Collaboration

What started as a planned five-track project eventually grew into an 11-track album after Mick Jenkins and EMIL spent around a year recording, travelling and developing the material.

That process gave A Murder of Crows its own identity. Jenkins brings his Chicago perspective, while EMIL’s production draws from the UK alternative rap and jazz scene he has worked in with artists including Loyle Carner and Knucks.

The result is a meeting of two artists who found plenty of common ground despite coming from different cities.
